Shure RMCE-BT2 Cable Review

Today I’m auditioning the new Shure RMCE-BT2 Cable –  a Bluetooth MMCX cable for use with any MMCX headphones.  At $149, this cable offers 10-hour battery life over a Bluetooth 5.0 connection.  But how does it sound?

Shure RMCE-BT2 Cable

The Shure RMCE-BT2 Cable was announced about a month ago, but it’s been stirring up interest ever since, thanks to its near-universal MMCX connection and long, 10-hour battery life.  This new cable utilizes Bluetooth 5.0 protocols, and supports Qualcomm aptX, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, AAC, and SBC audio.  But does the sound live up to the hype?

Design

Design-wise, the Shure RMCE-BT2 Cable utilizes a larger battery pack from which the left and right cables emanate.  A bit of memory wire at the ends of the cable allow the BT2 to adapt and conform to the shape of the users ears.

Thanks to the use of the MMCX connection, compatibility extends from the Shure brand to other manufacturers.  Westone, DUNU, Final Audio, Campfire, AKG, and Mackie earphones are all capable of connecting to this wireless cable.

Battery life is rated at a solid ten hours – an improvement over the older BT1’s standard 6-ish hours.  As a result of the larger battery, the BT2 uses a larger battery compartment that hangs at the back of the wearer’s neck.  Built into the battery pack is a metal clamp for attaching the earphone cable to a shirt collar – a surprisingly well-implemented feature that takes the weight out of the cable.

Charging is accomplished with a supplied micro USB cable.

Sound

The Shure RMCE-BT2 Cable remains relatively uncompressed, unlike cheaper MMCX Bluetooth cables.  As a result, the impression is one of a full, accurate sound with good detail and no real detriment to overall quality.  Of course, by nature of the Bluetooth Connection, there is going to be some compression.  However, it remains relatively unnoticed, as the overall listen experience remains immersive and accurate.

Final Thoughts

Despite a slightly larger battery reservoir on the Shure RMCE-BT2 Cable, this cable provides longer battery life that any other MMCX bluetooth cable on the market.  Connection strength is great, as is the flawless sound quality – leading to a rich and mesmerizing listening experience that doesn’t skimp on detail.

Headphone Dungeon Score – Five Skulls!

The Shure RMCE-BT2 Cable delivers solid bang for your buck, keeping the detail and giving you better battery life at 10 hours of continuous use.  Sure, the $149 asking price seems a bit steep for an earphone cable – but when you consider this is a Bluetooth cable compatible with most major brands and offering the best performance on the market, that price is more than fair.
